Grammy-Award Winners to Headline Women Composers Festival
Fourth-annual music festival features two days of performances with works written by dozens of women composers.
TAKOMA PARK, Md. — Grammy Award-winners Caroline Shaw and Attacca Quartet will headline Boulanger Initiative’s annual music festival WoCo Fest and will present music written by women and gender-marginalized composers. The festival is set across two days – May 27 at The Church of the Epiphany in Washington and May 28 at AMP by Strathmore in North Bethesda, Md.
Day One of the festival will feature over a dozen regional musical groups and artists, including District5, Atlantic Reed Consort, Whistling Hens, Balance Campaign, Titilayo Ayangade, and more. Day One will also include the East Coast premiere of composer Alexandra Gardner’s new work, “Sanctuary of Joy,” for violin and organ commissioned by Boulanger Initiative. Day Two will feature Recap with Lainie Fefferman, Leila Adu, Jiji, and Attacca Quartet & Caroline Shaw. Day Two’s in-person performances will also be livestreamed.
“WoCo Fest is a bright light of the Washington music scene – two days of beautifully curated music by both bigger-name artists intermixed with exciting newcomers, incredible local artists, and hidden gems that make you glad you showed up for the entire event,” says composer Alexandra Gardner.
