ABOUT THE MUSIC INCLUSION HUB

As lawyer and Black feminist advocate Kimberle Crenshaw noted in her seminal essay “Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist Politics,” there is a pressing need to work against the “single-axis framework” that ignores our multiple and hyphenated identities. An intersectional approach to anti-racism and gender equity “encourage(s) us to look beneath the prevailing conceptions of discrimination and to challenge....” The resulting aim “should be to facilitate the inclusion of marginalized groups for whom it can be said: "When they enter, we all enter."’

It is precisely this vision that we seek to plant in the young minds of school-age children across the country.

What is the Music Inclusion Hub?

  • A holistic suite of offerings that truly embeds (and normalizes) racial and gender inclusion at all grade levels.

  • Designed for youth in grades 2-12, early college, and beyond.

  • Includes multi-media, interactive and performance-based learning, and curriculum companion guides that infuse music with history, social studies, science, politics, and literature.
     

What are our goals?

  • ACCESS TO TOOLS: To provide educators with culturally responsive pedagogical tools & materials.

  • EXPOSE YOUNG MINDS: To show youth and young adults the power of music, storytelling, history, and their connections.

  • A JUST NARRATIVE: To bolster a more just and equitable narrative of artistic excellence.
     

What is our desired impact?

  • We believe this initiative has an impact that will last generations. Touching youth and learners of all ages - especially those in their formative years of social awareness.

The Music Inclusion Hub has the power to shape future leaders by planting seeds of cultural curiosity and expanding one's understanding of the world at large.

We seek to educate and empower a new generation of youth who in turn, will be future advocates, provocateurs, and leaders.
